The FOXTEL cable network in Australia is closing!!

(will be “switched off”) in 2023

A recent work order for a customer highlighted the need to consider your options now with regard to FOXTEL if you are an existing FOXTEL CABLE customer.

For this particular customer, they were 25 years with FOXTEL and they had the very first STANDARD Set Top Box which gave you

  • Standard Definition for all of the channels (Free to Air in Standard Definition plus FOXTEL Channels )

  • has no recording capability

  • very limited features such as Catch Up which is only available on the newer IQ boxes

The downside is that FOXTEL will upgrade the old STANDARD STB for you but you may have other issues with doing this especially if you do not have an existing aerial on your roof and a wall plate connection for your Free To Air Channels if you want to view these in High Definition

You see, FOXTEL are closing down the Cable network to save on costs ( I can explain the commercial reasons as to why when you call me ) and they are encouraging you to migrate over to either SATELLITE or INTERNET connections.

Hence why the FOXTEL IQ5 was created as it supports either delivery method.

However, regardless of your choice of SATELLITE or INTERNET delivery, you will still require either additional cabling to the new SATELLITE dish as a Satellite connection to a new IQ4 or IQ5 will require two cable feeds from the Satellite dish to the box ( if you choose that option ) or an external aerial to support the High Definition Free to Air channels if you choose the INTERNET option.

This is where you may run into difficulty as it is sometimes very difficult to run new cabling through the internal walls of your house for a SATELLITE or new aerial connection.

Depending on your individual circumstances, if additional cabling needs to be run for a new Satellite connection, in many cases, it is done via a FOXTEL technician running the cables externally via a conduit and this doesnt always look the neatest.

Keep in mind that if you are an existing Cable customer, but dont want the hassle of new cabling or a new system, then you dont have much choice. The network will be switched off in 2023 so it may be worth your while to consider your options now before the 2023 cut off date. Connect My Tech can walk you through your options before deciding on the method that works best for you.

About the cable network closure

What is happening?

How will I know if I’m affected?

Foxtel will advise impacted customers progressively before the TV cable network closes in 2023 and let you know what your options are.

Affected customers will be contacted by mail, eDM, SMS and other channels in the lead up the closure date.

Alternatively, you can use live chat to discuss how you can upgrade to the latest technology today.

Will my service remain the same price?

For most cable customers, there will be no change to your ongoing monthly price.

If you are currently receiving a personal video recording discount of $10/month per multiroom box (currently paying $15/month per box), you will have your current discount applied until 30 June 2024. At the end of this offer period, you will be charged the standard iQ multiroom box fee (currently $25/month per box). Recording functionality can be turned off.
